Onstage Cabaret Series
Realized in the summer of 2013, the Onstage cabaret series has since been an integral part of the Lucas Theatre repertoire. As the name suggests, Onstage provides the community with a unique entertainment experience, allowing patrons to enjoy talented performers in an intimate setting. Bathed in soft light and classic tunes, theatre-goers share the stage with the performer while enjoying a stocked bar and hors d’oeuvres. Past cabaret features include music from greats such as Judy Garland, Edith Piaf, and Johnny Mercer; and have left audiences laughing, crying, dancing, and always wanting more.
Summer 2017 Schedule
6/22: Old Black Magic
Join original cabaret performers Natasha Drena and Trae Gurley as they explore the music of Savannah’s native son, Johnny Mercer and his influence on the careers of Judy Garland and Frank Sinatra. Local Mercer aficionado, David Duckworth, will be tinkling the ivories as we sing our way through Johnny’s Great American Songbook. You’ll be shouting “Hurray for Hollywood” as our “Skylark” leads you all the way to our beloved “Moon River.”
6/29: Southern Holiday
Jane Ogle leads Southern Holiday Jazz band in a tribute to one of the greatest jazz voices of our time, Billie Holiday. Jane’s dynamic interpretations of Holiday’s music will leave you laughing with friends, whispering the words, and humming the tunes. Don’t miss hearing this Lady Sing the Blues with her dynamic interpretations of Holiday’s music.
7/6: Outlaw Country
Waylon. Willie. Johnny. Merle. Fiercely independent, these outlaws of country music abandoned lush orchestrations and stripped the music to its core. Join our band of local bad boys including Anders Thomsen, Igor Fiksman, Jon Waits, Natasha Drena, Jared Hall, John Pizzichemi, and Ira Miller as they pay tribute to these country legends and many more. Get ready for an evening of Western swing, and a healthy dose of raw honky-tonk tunes. Yeehaw!
7/13: Southern Soul
The pioneers of southern soul were born and bred right here in Georgia and influenced a style of music that ran all the way up to Memphis. Join us as we pay homage to the legendary Ray Charles, James Brown, Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, and even a little Elvis as interpreted by none other than Laiken Williams, Cecilia Arango, and Trae Gurley. Eric Jones will lead a combo of musicians who are sure to keep Georgia on your mind.
7/20: Sinners and Saints
Some of us are Sinners. Some of us are Saints. Some of us are a little of both!
Join cabaret favorite, JJ Collins for an evening of Pop, Broadway, Standards and performances that are sure to put a shine on your halo or sharpen up your devil’s horns.
7/27: Southern Blues
Some of America’s most popular music has its roots in the juke joints of the south. From ragtime and dance music to the blues and barrel house, the legacy of the juke joint is very clear. Join cabaret veteran, Roger Moss with Savannah’s Blues Legend, Eric Culberson as they take you on a musical journey. With Eric Jones working his magic on the Steinway, this show is not to be missed
After the smashing success of last year’s cabaret, Maggie and Jackson are back to face off in a He said, she said battle of hot Latin beats and cool jazz grooves. “Anything You Can Do, I Can Do Better” will be the theme of the night as they pit sambas and salsas against ballads and bebop. Don’t miss out on what is sure to be the sexiest or hottest show of the season.
8/10: The Music of My Heroes
“Jody Espina – The Music of My Heroes”, will be an intimate portrait of the music and lives of the musicians that most influenced Jody Espina. These tortured geniuses, including Lester Young, Charlie Parker and Stan Getz were all phenomenal stars in their day and for all the heights they reached, the depths were equally profound. The music will be outstanding and the stories unforgettable, accompanied by best the rhythm section anywhere and arguably Savannah’s most gifted and passionate saxophonist.
8/17: Go Your Own Way
We’ve heard “Rumours” that this will be the most rockin’ show by a “Landslide”. Join Cecilia Arango, Christopher Blair, Natasha Drena and Jenny Woodruff as we pay tribute to our favorite British-American band, Fleetwood Mac. With a full band, including Kim Steiner and cabaret newcomer, Bill Smith paying homage to Lindsey Buckingham on guitar, we know you’ll be saying “Don’t Stop” as you “Tango in the Night.”
